Crew of the royal train for the Duke of Gloucester and 36 class locomotive, Orange, 27 November 1934 / Sam Hood

Two 36 class engines were assigned to double-head the Royal train. They were reminiscent of English GWR design and with a tractive effort of over 33,000 lbs each, provided ample power for fast schedules over the steep NSW Railways' lines during the tour. They were painted a royal blue livery. Her Majesty's Theatre Fire, Sydney, March 1902 / photographer unknown

One of the loveliest theatres built in Sydney, it had played Ben Hur, complete with a dangerous, racing treadmill and backdrop for the chariot race, and was then closed for the outbreak of bubonic plague in Sydney. It was rebuilt and re-opened by 1903, only to be demolished about thirty years later for a Woolworths. Twenty-five of these large steam locomotives were planned but only 13 were built as they were not as successful as the previous 57 class on which they were based and they were phased out as diesel came in.
